Description
A new translation of the best-known of all Islamic poems, the Burda (‘Mantle’) by al-Busiri. Each page features calligraphy by Betül Kırkan, followed by the English translation, and a fragment of a further poem on a related theme by another Muslim poet. The book is richly illuminated in gold and full colour by Ersan Perçem.
The Mantle Adorned is a completely new translation of the Burda (‘Mantle Poem’) of Imam Sharaf al-Din al-Busiri, May Allah be pleased with him, (d.1297). Abdal Hakim Murad has consulted the classical commentaries to produce this clear and careful English version. ‘Not one of you has faith until I am dearer to him than his father, his child, and all mankind’ —(Hadith narrated by Bukhari). ‘The Burda is the favourite poem of Muslims everywhere’ —(AnneMarie Schimmel). Shaykh Abd’al Hakim Murad has added to each verse a further verse of poetry by another poet, which expresses a similar sentiment of love for the Blessed Prophet, May Allah bless him and grant him peace. The book therefore serves as the best collection currently available in English of poems in praise of the Seal of the Messengers, may Allah bless him and give him peace. Poets represented include Rumi, Attar, Ibn Hazm, etc. The Translator: Abdal Hakim Murad was born in London in 1960. He is the author of several translations from Arabic, including volumes of the classic Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya Ulum al-Din) by Imam al-Ghazali, May Allah be pleased with him.
